Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy

High blood pressure during pregnancy can affect both you and your baby. Some people develop high blood pressure for the first time during pregnancy. Others develop preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that can affect organs such as the kidneys. Finding and treating these conditions early helps lower the risk of serious problems.

High blood pressure may continue after childbirth. People who have high blood pressure during pregnancy also have a higher risk of heart disease later in life. Regular follow-up visits help your care team monitor your blood pressure and support your long-term heart health.

Your care team may recommend:

  • Blood pressure checks during pregnancy and after delivery.

  • Checking your blood pressure at home.

  • Follow-up visits to review your blood pressure and other heart health risks.

  • Healthy lifestyle changes to support your heart.

Your care team will help you understand your condition and choose a treatment plan that considers both your health and your baby’s health.
